HDTV, Film, and Video
The growth of High Defintion HDTV documentary programming in the next few years will bring about the need for a new rating classification, SRWO, "So Real, Watch Out!" Doubts about that? Watch Discovery Channel’s newest one hour HDTV documentaries, Crocodile Wranglers, Snake Attack and Mardi Gras.

They were shot on location in Australia, Venezula, Florida and New Orleans by lighting cameraman, Rob Van Praag. After spending ten years with NBC Burbank, Rob relocated to New England and PBS for several years and then began Van Praag Productions, incorporated in the Midwest in 1992.

Van Praag Productions offers two field production crews always available out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Rob works as a local both in Cincinnati and San Francisco where he currently resides.

HDTV allows the producer and director to stick to storytelling. Traditionally, the film director is taken away from the actors due to the demanding technicalities of film. HDTV allows the crew to see and hear the end result as it is being recorded — no surprises or guesswork. Cost is also a factor. Film can only be shot once.

A perfect example of this was Mardi Gras, where we shot a ton of footage with multiple cameras. High Def gave us the opportunity to get the coverage we needed without going over budget.
